ABSTRACT

Downdraft gasifier is one of the equipment that have been employed in biomass gasification for syngas production which is used as gaseous fuels and chemicals. The quality of the produced syngas depend upon the operating conditions of the gasifier. In this research, a counter flow heat exchanger was fitted to the air inlet of a downdraft gasifier in order to extract heat from the produced high temperature syngas and used to preheat the gasifying agent (Air) before being introduced into the gasifier. Experiments were conducted varying equivalence ratio (ER) between 0.15 and 0.5 with the heat exchanger and also without the heat exchanger using wood chips as fuel. Result showed that the composition of the combustible gasses (CO, H2 and CH4) increased from ER of 0.15 to 0.3 and then began to fall for both cases of preheating and not preheating the gasifying agent. The lower heating value (LHV) and cold gas efficiency (CGE) also followed a similar trend. The maximum LHV and CGE obtained using the heat exchanger were 5.1825MJ/kg and 70.4635% respectively while for the case of no heat exchanger were 4.9435 MJ/kg and 67.2145% respectively. From the result analysis, it can be seen that preheating the gasifying agent (air) gave more quality of syngas produced.
